I jumped at the chance to get this ’scope at Sam’s for $198, and have found it elsewhere on-line for as low as $149. But I have nothing but praise for the Meade DS-2114 since I put it together and set it up in my driveway. I pointed in in a general “North” position and let it find two alignment stars, and was up and running in about 15 minutes. My first view of Jupiter and its moons was spectacular (I’m a newbie at this stuff), and I can’t wait to check out the ISS and the next shuttle launch (I live about 60 miles from Cape Canaveral).
I have seen Meade 2114 listed for over $300 for a long time, and was going to buy it or something similar all along, until I saw it during one of our shopping excursions at Sam’s, and bought it immediately.
The computer works great and needs very little set-up, and performs as advertised. I had it point out several planets and star clusters, and never had to adjust the scope more than a touch to center them. My only two complaints are that the motors are a bit on the noisy side, and it didn’t come with a Barlow lens, which I will be buying shortly. The eyepieces it does come with are sufficient for wide angle and close-up views.
As anyone can find Meade 2114 for under $200, I can say that it is an excellent telescope, and well worth the money.
