Nokia N82

Nokia N82 Review:
Like the N95, the Nokia N82 has a 5-megapixel camera but Nokia N82 also includes a Xenon flash that makes a world of difference, as it produced amazing photos and videos. The Symbian smartphone continues to offer Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS, and it’s a solid performer to boot. With all that going for it, it’s really a bummer that the N82 has such a horrible design. The hardware feels a bit cheap, and the navigation buttons leave much to be desired. We’re also disappointed by the lack of U.S. 3G support.

Nokia N82 Features:

The Nokia N82 has a large 2.4-inch screen with a 240 x 320-pixel resolution and support for 16.7 million colors. It comes with a new content driven 3D multimedia menu and includes a convenient orientation sensor that rotates the user interface automatically between horizontal and portrait mode. Nokia N82 based on S60 software operating on the Symbian OS, enabling you to personalize the N82 by choosing from the Ovi family of Nokia internet services, including Nokia Music Store, N-Gage games and Nokia Maps. The Nokia N82 has a 100 MB internal memory, and it’s expandable via MicroSD memory cards (up to 4 GB in size).

The Nokia N82 actually has two cameras, a high resolution camera on the back of the device (the main camera in landscape mode) and a lower resolution camera on the front (CIF resolution, 352 x 288). The main 5-megapixel camera on the back of the N95 supports an image capture resolution of 2592 x 1944 pixels, and it features a focus range of 10cm (4 inches) to infinity, up to a 20x digital zoom for still images, and a Xenon flash.

Fast camera activation, autofocus with a dedicated autofocus assist lamp, fast reloading between shots and DVD-like quality video capture make it a truly convenient and credible tool for capturing and telling your life stories. You can also capture crisp videos at up to a 640 x 480-pixel resolution at 30 frames per second (fps) in 24-bit/16.7-million colors. Images are saved as JPEG files while videos are recorded in the MPEG-4 file format with the .mp4 file extension, or in the 3GPP file format with the .3gp file extension (sharing quality). Photos and video clips can be enjoyed on a compatible television thanks to the Nokia N82’s TV out feature and support for Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) technology.

With high speed Wi-Fi connectivity and one-click upload to online communities, the Nokia N82 makes sharing your experiences and discoveries easy. When viewing a picture or video, simply one press of a button starts uploading it while you carry on using the other phone functions.

The integrated A-GPS and preinstalled Nokia Maps help you explore and locate new places, whether in another country or just around the corner. With access to more than 15 million points of interest, you can locate and navigate to the most interesting sights, bars or restaurants wherever you are. You can also send map excerpts and routes to friends by MMS or save map screen shots to the gallery.

Take your media with you when you’re out on the go. With Nokia N82’s built-in RealPlayer software, you can stream and download your favorite content onto the Nokia N82, giving you access to the latest news, sports, and entertainment updates. Or sync up with your PC and play the music and movies stored on your hard drive. It’s compatible with a wide variety of digital audio formats (including MP3, AAC, WMA, and secure WMA). You can listen to your favorite radio programs via the integrated FM radio, and the Visual Radio feature lets you see information about songs or artists.

Nokia N82 phone provides Bluetooth version 2.0 wireless connectivity with EDR (enhanced data rate), and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, and audio/video remote control. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones.

Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) technology means that the Nokia N82 will discover, interact with, and control other compatible home electronic devices. This includes PCs, media centers, home entertainment systems, new smart appliances, home automation systems, networked peripherals, and Web-based services. With compatible equipment, you can stream video from your Nokia device directly to your TV, or hear music tracks stored on your PC through your living room’s sound system.

Nokia N82 Performance:

Nokia N82’s General performance was good. We found the Nokia N82 to be more responsive than the N95 with less of a delay when launching or switching between applications. Our patience did get tested a little when trying to browse Web sites using EDGE speeds and waiting for the phone to get a GPS fix. It took about 7 minutes for the N82 to get a lock on our location, and it took a while for maps to redraw as we moved about town. Multimedia performance was good. Music sounded decent through the phone’s speakers, though a bit one sided. Admittedly though, we missed having the dedicated media buttons that the N95 has. Videos looked fairly clear with some slight pixelation, but picture and sound were always synchronized.

The Nokia N82’s 1,050 mAh lithium ion battery has a rated talk time of 4.3 hours and up to 9 days of standby time. We are still conducting our battery-drain tests but will update this section as soon as we have final results. According to FCC radiation tests, the N82 has a digital SAR rating of 0.78 watt per kilogram.
