Samsung HL-T5687S Review
Enjoy more pictures and less-frames with Samsung HL-T5687S DLP HDTV. The piano black bezel is just 0.6-inch wide; the set’s slim depth lets it fit where others won’t. The energy-efficient 56-inch screen features a powerful, long-lasting LED light engine that turns on almost instantly. Full HD 1080p resolution and Samsung Cinema Smooth technology deliver a wide range of brilliant colors with bright images and crisp definition. The blackest blacks, brightest whites and nuanced tones are yours with a 10000:1 dynamic-contrast ratio. Hidden speakers deliver clear, robust SRS TruSurround XT sound.
Samsung’s new LED light engine replaces the arc lamp & color wheel design of previous DLP HDTVs, and realizes beautiful color. LED will last the life of the TV. Samsung LED DLP TVs eliminate the need to replace the consumable lamps every few years, and thus have less impact on the environment and on one’s wallet. Samsung’s LED light engine makes possible an Ultra-Wide Color Gamut that exceeds the NTSC defined color space spec for richer color than you’ve seen before on TV. Samsung HL-T5687S DLP HDTVs with an LED engine are more energy efficient than similar sized flat panel displays, and the lack of a moving color whell in the design means they perform with less noise than any previous DLP HDTV design.
Samsung HL-T5687S’s Cinema Smooth Light Engine
Samsung is the worldwide leader in creating light engines that harness DLP HDTV technology from Texas Instruments. Samsung’s Cinema Smooth light engine brings together the right optics, electronic circuitry and replaceable light source to create a brilliant picture that’s more lifelike and much closer to film. Now in its sixth year of evolution, Samsung’s Cinema Smooth light engine delivers crisp, 1080p High Definition resolution with high contrast and brightness, defined edges and sharp detail.
Next Generation DLP Chips from Texas Instruments
Samsung employs a Texas Instruments DLP chip that is comprised of millions of microscopic mirrors. The DLP chip is faster than any other HDTV technology, with the mirrors switching on & off 15,000 times a second to deliver a razor-sharp picture for fast moving images. When combined with Samsung’s new Cinema Smooth light engine, the result is a crisp, bright picture with deep, rich colors that’s closer to film.
Samsung HL-T5687S’s SRS TruSurround
Samsung HL-T5687S is equipped with the best that technology can offer in sound quality. Even when viewing regular broadcasts, Samsung’s two speaker surround sound makes you feel as if the theater has been brought to your living room.
I have had Samsung HL-T5687S a couple of weeks now, and am extremely pleased with Samsung HL-T5687S. I have DirecTV HD, and on the native HD channels the picture is simply stunning. However, like anything else, it’s not perfect. Here are my pros and cons:
Pros - Beautiful picture. Absloutely stunning in HD, and pretty good with SD content. Very accurate and beautiful colors. Very deep black, and brilliant bright whites. LED light engine means better picture and no bulb replacement, potentially saving hundreds, or even thousands of dollars over its lifetime compared to a typical DLP. Not only that, but according to Cnet, Samsung HL-T5687S costs even less to run than just about any LCD or DLP close to it’s size. The LED light engine is very energy efficient, and uses much less electricity than a comparbale plasma screen. No motion blur of LCD’s, no burn in of plasmas, and hundreds of dollars less than either. Very little, if any light reflection. Nice and easy onscreen menus with plenty of options for all but the most fussy. Three HDMI ports, and plenty of inputs. Very handy to have the ports on the right side vs. the rear and makes hookups much easier. Samsung HL-T5687S is very light for it’s size, coming in around 70lbs, and is also only about 14″” deep in a beautiful piano black cabinet.
Cons: Sound is just OK, but most will have a surround system hooked up anyway. If viewing the picture from the side, the screen tends to darken. Mine has some slight screen uniformity problems which is most notable in nighttime football games. While the picture is gourgeous, for those who will not comprimise on picture quality, it doesn’t quite meet the standard set by a good plasma screen.
There are so many things to like about Samsung HL-T5687S that I could go on for paragraphs. I covered most of it in my pros above. One of the more surprising things is I thought I would get more of a reflection from room and outdoor sunlight, but it does a very good job on dampening those reflections. I have a set of 3 french doors at the back of the living room on the opposite wall from the TV, which allows morning sunlight to flood in, and the Samsung HL-T5687S still looks great!
Since it’s easy to go on about the great things with the TV set, let me talk briefly about a couple of small negatives.
I have a couch that is on a right angle to the TV. If sitting there, the picture darkens. Most of the time, I don’t sit there, so it’s ok. And when I do, it’s not bad, and is certainly viewable but not as good as in front of the TV. If the widest viewing angle is needed, consider plasma. I also notice that when watching football games, there appears to be lighter and darker areas on the grass or turf. Again, this is very minor as I am just in awe of watching games in HD, but for the fussiest viewers this could be a concern.
All in all, truly a 5 star product. Gives you nearly the picture of a plasma, at a far lower cost per inch up front, and costs far less in electricty to run. I give Samsung HL-T5687S my highest recomendation, and hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine!
