Sony BDP-S350

Sony BDP-S350 Review:
Revel in astounding HD clarity with the Sony BDP-S350 Blu-ray™ Disc player. Featuring BD-Live compatibility*, you can take full advantage of the Bonus View feature of select Blu-ray movies as well as acquire the latest features and updates as they become available. Sony BDP-S350 player also outputs a Full 1080/24p True Cinema picture, plus upscales your existing DVD collection to 1080p when using the HDMI™ connection. Superior picture quality isn’t the only thing you’ll notice, the Sony BDP-S350 comes with Dolby® TrueHD™ which delivers sound as stunning as the high definition picture itself. Bringing it all together is the new icon based Xcross Media Bar, which provides simple navigation of the player’s menu system.

The Sony BDP-S350 is compatible with Dolby TrueHD, Dolby’s next-generation lossless technology developed for high-definition disc-based media. Dolby TrueHD delivers tantalizing sound that is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master, unlocking the true high-definition entertainment experience on next-generation discs. When coupled with high-definition video, Dolby TrueHD offers an unprecedented home theater experience that lets you enjoy sound as stunning as the high-definition picture.

The Sony BDP-S350 is packed with all the very latest features and specifications, meeting the new blu-ray profile 2.0. The Sony BDPS350 supports BonusView (picture in picture) which is featured on some new blu-rau movies, and is BD-Live ready featuring an Ethernet port for access to internet based interactive features and for easy firmware updating.

There are external ports for adding local flash bases memory storage. Full 1080p /60p /24p True Cinema outputs are supported, and upscaling of standard DVDs to 1080p through HDMI are also supported bringing the most from existing DVD collections. The Sony BDP-S350 blu-ray player also offers 7,1 channel Dobly True HD / Dolby Digital Plus, DTS HD and Master Audio decoding and bit-stream output.

AVCHD discs encoded with x.v.Color (xvYCC / DeepColor, HDMI 1.3) are supported along with BD-R/RE (BDMV and BDAV modes), DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW , CDs, and JPEG files are all supported.

The Sony BDP-S350 supports BonusView (Profile 1.1) (picture-in-picture), which is featured on select new Blu-ray Disc home video releases, and is also BD-Live ready, with an Ethernet port for easy firmware updates and access to Internet-based interactive content features. A firmware update enabling BD-Live is planned later this year.

So this is important. BD Live is not available out of the box. You will have to wait until Sony releases an update and then upgrade the S350. The Sony PS3 supports BD Live today.

The Sony BDP-S350 also features quick start up mode improving the player’s boot up time to approximately a few seconds and offers an external port for local storage for BD-Live, allowing users to add an optional flash storage device (sold separately).

The Sony BDP-S350 uses the same ” Sigma SMP8634 RevC” chipset as the Samsung BD-P1400, which not surprisingly has the same audio capabilities as the BDP-S350.

Although the Sony BDP-S350 is Profile 1.1 right now, the player can be upgraded to BD-Live in the future (you will need to provide a USB memory stick to bring the player up to the 1GB level that’s in the BD-Live specs).

The Player can Bitstream all advanced audio codecs via HDMI 1.3, and can internally decode all codecs except DTS-HD MA and HR.
